About IgboAmaka Scotland

IgboAmaka Scotland is a vibrant community organisation dedicated to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people while fostering unity and support for all members of the diaspora living in Scotland. We aim to create a strong, cohesive, and dynamic community that celebrates Igbo values, promotes cultural awareness, and uplifts every member through shared experiences and collaboration.
Our Mission
Our mission is to build a supportive and engaged Igbo community in Scotland (specifically, Edinburgh, Fife, Lothians and the Borders), promoting Igbo culture and values while fostering solidarity, equality, and mutual respect. We strive to ensure the welfare of our community members through various social, cultural, and educational activities, all while embracing the spirit of “onye aghala nwanne ya” (No one should abandon their siblings). Through these guiding principles, we strengthen our ties and work towards the collective good.
Our Vision
IgboAmaka Scotland envisions a united and empowered Igbo community in Scotland that not only thrives but also contributes positively to the wider Scottish society. We aim to preserve the unique cultural identity of the Igbo people while embracing the opportunities and challenges of life in the diaspora. Our vision is to create a space where culture, education, and support come together, ensuring that our community remains resilient, adaptable, and ever-growing.
Our Values
At the heart of IgboAmaka Scotland are values deeply rooted in Igbo tradition and culture:
- Communalism: We believe in the power of community and collective action, working together to support one another, embodying the value of “onye aghala nwanne ya” (do not leave your sibling behind).
- Cultural Preservation: Our commitment to promoting Igbo culture is reflected in the celebration of traditional events such as the Iri Ji (New Yam Festival), as well as the teaching of Igbo language, arts, and customs to younger generations.
- Egalitarianism: We uphold the principle of equality within our community, where everyone has a voice, and leadership is based on respect for all.
- Education and Empowerment: Through our educational programs, including language classes, STEM workshops, and civic education, we aim to empower our community members, particularly the younger generation, with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.
- Support and Welfare: We stand by our members during times of joy and hardship, offering support through fundraising efforts and welfare initiatives, ensuring that no one is left behind.
- Intercultural Exchange: We promote mutual understanding and respect by engaging with the broader Scottish society, hosting events that encourage intercultural dialogue and learning.
- Resilience and Adaptation: We take pride in our ability to adapt to new challenges while remaining grounded in our cultural roots, ensuring that our community thrives in the diaspora.
Our structure
IgboAmaka Scotland is generally governed by an Executive Council with a President at the helm. The Executive Council with different committees ensures the smooth running of the organisation.
Our Activities
IgboAmaka Scotland offers a range of activities and services designed to strengthen our community, promote cultural heritage, and support the welfare of our members:
- Cultural Celebrations: We host annual events such as the Iri Ji (New Yam Festival), which brings our community together in celebration of our agricultural heritage and traditions.
- Educational Programs: We offer Igbo language classes, holiday STEM workshops for children, civic education, and literary discussions to foster learning and personal growth within the community.
- Community Support Initiatives: Our organization provides financial and emotional support to members facing hardship, including bereavement, through fundraising and welfare programs.
- Family Outings and Social Events: We organize family summer outings, BBQs, and other social gatherings that strengthen communal bonds and provide opportunities for connection and relaxation.
- Biennial Lecture Series: Every two years, we hold lectures focusing on topics relevant to the Igbo diaspora, including culture, history, migration, and community development.
By actively engaging in these activities, IgboAmaka Scotland is committed to building a strong and united Igbo community in Scotland—one that preserves its cultural heritage while embracing its role in the wider society.
